I believe that art education is a powerful tool for developing voice, identity, and critical consciousness. My teaching centers on creating learning experiences where students use visual language—particularly photography, drawing, and multimedia—to explore who they are, how they see the world, and how they can contribute to it. I view the classroom not simply as a space for skill acquisition, but as a studio for inquiry, reflection, and expression.

My approach is grounded in interdisciplinary and culturally responsive practices. I design units that connect art to history, community, and lived experience, with a strong emphasis on African American and Afro-Latino perspectives. Through projects such as social justice photography, self-portraiture, and exhibition-based work, students are encouraged to engage with themes of identity, duality, and social context. This allows them to see art not only as a medium, but as a form of storytelling and agency.

I prioritize rigorous, student-centered instruction that balances technical skill development with conceptual depth. Students are guided through structured processes that include ideation, drafting, critique, and revision, helping them build both discipline and creative confidence. I incorporate critique protocols and reflective writing to support deeper thinking, ensuring that students can articulate their choices and intentions as artists.

Beyond the classroom, I extend learning into public and community-facing experiences. I have designed and led exhibitions and programs that allow students to share their work with authentic audiences, reinforcing the value of their voices and the relevance of their work. These experiences not only increase engagement, but also help students understand the impact of their creativity beyond the classroom.

Ultimately, my goal is to cultivate a learning environment where students feel seen, challenged, and empowered. I aim to develop not only skilled artists, but thoughtful individuals who can use creativity as a tool for communication, reflection, and change. Through this work, I strive to prepare students to navigate both academic and real-world contexts with confidence, purpose, and a strong sense of identity.
